Local 10% Procurement
Adopt 10% Local Procurement Goals
The NC 10% Campaign encourages counties, cities, and institutions to have a goal of 10% locally-grown and caught in their food procurement. Short-term goals can be 10% locally-grown tomatoes or 10% local for a season. Long-term goals should include adopting policy in contracts and resolutions to sustain the momentum. Our resources provide examples of institutional procurement goals and examples of 10% procurement language.
McDowell County 5% Local in Senior Services
McDowell County Senior Services worked with the NC Farm to Senior Services (F2SS) project to pilot local food procurement for their congregate meals at the Senior Center. Moving forward the Senior Services is intent on allocating 5% of their budget toward locally-grown food from the Foothills Food Hub.
UNC Pembroke Pledges 10% Local Food
Students at University of North Carolina at Pembroke are passionate about local and organic food. Students worked with their Sodexo-run Dining Services to sign up for the NC 10% Campaign and pledge to source at least 10% of their food purchases from local farmers. With the help of local distributor FreshPoint they increased their purchases from 1% in 2015 to 7% in 2017. Students also have farm visits at New Ground Farm and other area farms to learn more about the food on their plates and the sustainable production methods used to grow it.
Schools Add Local Foods to Contractor Bid
Many school systems put out a request for proposals for food service providers with language that includes preference for local food products. Food Hubs like ByWay Foods of Working Landscapes have worked with schools to understand specific needs for school kitchen equipment and staff in order to make their products cafeteria-ready. ByWay Foods and other food hubs are able to meet the farm-to-school demand, open market opportunities for local farmers, and provide nutritious food to schoolchildren.
